Claude AI Pricing for Lawyers: Free vs Pro vs Team vs Enterprise

Choosing the Right Claude Plan Is an Ethics Decision, Not Just a Budget Decision

Selecting a Claude plan involves more than features and prices. Your plan choice directly impacts your ability to comply with ABA Model Rule 1.6 (confidentiality) and your state's ethics rules on client data protection. The wrong plan could expose client information to model training. The right plan provides powerful AI capabilities with the data protections that legal practice requires.

Claude Free: Good for Learning, Not for Client Work

Claude's free tier allows anyone to use Claude through claude.ai with basic capabilities:

  • Cost: $0/month
  • Usage: Limited messages per day, access to the standard model
  • Context window: Standard (sufficient for short documents)
  • Data policy: Training is governed by a privacy setting. If you opt in, conversations can be retained for up to 5 years; if you opt out, retention is 30 days. Under the July 2026 policy, conversations flagged for safety review can be used for model improvement even if you opted out

Verdict for lawyers: Use the free tier to learn how Claude works and test prompts with non-confidential, hypothetical scenarios. Never input client-confidential information on the free tier. The data retention policy does not meet the requirements of ABA Model Rule 1.6.

Claude Pro: The Starting Point for Solo Practitioners

Claude Pro is the first paid tier and provides a significant upgrade:

  • Cost: $20/month per user ($17/month billed annually)
  • Usage: Substantially more messages, priority access during peak times
  • Context window: Large context window, essential for legal documents
  • Models: Access to Claude's most capable models
  • Data policy: Same consumer privacy-setting choice as the free tier. Opt out of training and retention is 30 days; opt in and it can run up to 5 years, with a safety-review exception under the July 2026 policy

Verdict for lawyers: Claude Pro is a reasonable starting point for solo practitioners who need the full context window for contract review and document analysis. Review Anthropic's current data policy carefully before using with client data.

Claude Max: More Capacity for Heavy Individual Use

Claude Max sits between Pro and the commercial plans for individual power users:

  • Cost: From $100/month (5x Pro usage) or $200/month (20x Pro usage)
  • Usage: Much higher limits for attorneys running document-heavy work all day
  • Data policy: Same consumer terms as Free and Pro, governed by your privacy setting

Verdict for lawyers: Max solves capacity, not confidentiality. A solo attorney who hits Pro's limits daily may want Max, but the data terms are still consumer terms. For client-confidential work, Team remains the better fit.

Claude Team: The Right Choice for Most Law Firms

Claude Team is designed for professional use and offers the data protections most law firms need:

  • Cost: Standard seats at $20/user/month billed annually ($25 billed monthly), plus Premium seats at $100/user/month billed annually for heavy users. Teams run from 5 to 150 seats
  • Usage: Higher message limits than Pro, designed for heavy professional use
  • Context window: Large context window, up to 1 million tokens on current models
  • Data policy: Commercial terms. Anthropic does not train on your data by default and acts as a data processor, with retention controls available
  • Admin features: Team management, usage analytics, centralized billing

Verdict for lawyers: Claude Team is the minimum recommended plan for any firm handling client-confidential information. The no-training-by-default commercial terms align with ABA confidentiality requirements, and the admin features support the governance infrastructure that ethics rules require.

Claude Enterprise: For Large Firms with Compliance Requirements

Claude Enterprise provides the full suite of features with enterprise-grade security:

  • Cost: Custom pricing (contact Anthropic)
  • Usage: Highest limits, dedicated capacity options
  • Context window: Extended context options available
  • Data policy: Commercial terms with no training by default, custom retention agreements, and additional security certifications (SOC 2 Type II)
  • Features: SSO/SAML, SCIM provisioning, custom data retention policies, API access, dedicated support

Verdict for lawyers: Am Law 200 firms and any firm with regulatory compliance requirements (financial services, healthcare) should evaluate Claude Enterprise. The security certifications and SSO integration support the institutional governance that large firms need.

Which Plan Should You Choose?

  • Learning and testing: Free tier with hypothetical scenarios only
  • Solo practitioner: Pro for personal use, Team if handling client data regularly
  • Small firm (2-15 attorneys): Team plan for everyone who uses AI
  • Mid-size firm (15-200 attorneys): Team or Enterprise depending on compliance needs
  • Large firm (200+ attorneys): Enterprise with SSO and centralized governance

The Cost-Benefit Analysis

At $20 to $25 per standard seat per month, Claude Team costs roughly $240 to $300 per attorney per year. If Claude saves an attorney even one hour per week on tasks like contract review, research, and drafting, the ROI is strong — many multiples of the cost.
