Claude for Legal Pricing (2026): Plugins Free, Plans $20+

The Short Answer

Claude for Legal costs nothing on its own. Anthropic released it on May 12, 2026 as an open-source suite of 12 practice-area plugins under the Apache 2.0 license (the repository has since added a partner-built CoCounsel plugin maintained by Thomson Reuters), and there is no per-plugin charge, no legal add-on tier, and no separate "Claude Legal subscription" to buy. What you pay for is the Claude plan the plugins run on: as of October 2026, that is $20 per month for Pro, $100 or $200 per month for the two Max tiers, $20 to $125 per seat per month for Team depending on seat type and billing cycle, and, for Enterprise, a listed $20 per seat per month (billed annually) plus usage at API rates.

So if you searched "how much does Claude for Legal cost," the honest reframe is "which Claude plan does my firm need," and that question has a real answer that depends on three things: whether you handle client data (you do), how many people need access, and how heavily each of them will use it. The rest of this post walks the plans in order, says what each one actually buys a law practice, and flags the costs that do not appear on the pricing page.

What "Free" Means Here, Precisely

Three different things get called "free" in this conversation, and only two of them are.

• The plugins are free. The anthropics/claude-for-legal repository is public, Apache 2.0 licensed, and installable at no charge. That license permits commercial use, modification, and redistribution, so a firm can fork the litigation plugin, rewrite its templates around its own playbook, and keep the result private.
• Claude's Free plan exists, but it does not run the plugins. Claude for Legal installs as a set of Claude plugins, and per Anthropic's Help Center, plugins are available only on paid plans (Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise). Free gets you chat, web search, file creation, and skills, which is genuinely useful for learning, but not the legal toolkit.
• Your time is not free. Each plugin's README directs you to run a "cold-start interview" that captures your practice profile before the skills produce anything specific. Every Current Claude Plan, and What It Buys a Firm

Free: $0

Chat on web, desktop, and mobile, plus web search, memory, artifacts, file creation, and skills. No Claude Code, no Cowork, and no plugins, so no legal toolkit. Fine for a law student or a lawyer testing whether Claude's drafting voice suits them. Not a working tier for a practice, and not a tier for client data: consumer plans can use your conversations for model training, depending on the setting you choose in Privacy settings (more on that below).

Pro: $20 per month, or $17 per month billed annually ($200 up front)

This is the floor for Claude for Legal. Pro adds Claude Code, Claude Cowork (which Anthropic began merging with chat into one Claude experience in September 2026), Projects, more Claude models, the Microsoft 365 integration, and materially more usage than Free. A solo practitioner can install the litigation, commercial, or employment plugin in Cowork on Pro and use every skill in it. The catch is capacity: Pro's usage limit is shared across Claude and Claude Code (Cowork tasks count against your plan usage too, and Anthropic notes that multi-step tasks use more of it than a quick question), and a lawyer who runs a 200-page deposition through a summarization skill, then drafts three letters, then asks Cowork to reorganize a matter folder, can hit the ceiling before lunch. If that happens more than occasionally, the next tier is cheaper than the frustration.

Max: $100 per month (5x) or $200 per month (20x)

Same features as Pro with five or twenty times the usage, higher output caps, and early access to new features (Cowork on web and mobile, for instance, reached Max subscribers first in July 2026). Max is the right tier for a solo or a single heavy user in a small firm who treats Claude as a daily associate rather than an occasional tool. It is still a consumer plan, though, which matters for the next paragraph.

Team: $20 or $100 per seat per month (annual), $25 or $125 (monthly), 2 to 150 seats

Team is where most firms with client data should land, for one reason that has nothing to do with features: it is a commercial plan, and Anthropic's commercial terms do not use your content to train models. Consumer plans (Free, Pro, Max) can, depending on the model-training setting each user chooses, a change Anthropic announced on August 28, 2025, with existing users given until October 8, 2025 to choose. You can opt out on a Pro account, but a written contractual term is a better answer to a client or a bar inquiry than a settings toggle. Team also brings central billing, SSO, domain verification, admin controls, and organization-wide skills deployment, which is how a five-lawyer firm distributes one customized playbook to everyone.

Both seat types include Claude Code and Cowork, so the legal plugins run on either. The difference is usage: the Help Center puts standard seats at 1.25x Pro's per-session usage and premium seats at 6.25x. A sensible small-firm configuration is premium seats for the one or two people who live in Cowork and standard seats for everyone else. You can mix them, and the minimum is two seats.

Enterprise: $20 per seat plus usage, annual billing

Anthropic's pricing page lists Enterprise at $20 per seat per month, billed annually, with usage billed at API rates on top, so the total depends on model and workload. It adds spend controls, SCIM provisioning, audit logs, a compliance API, custom data retention, IP allowlisting, and a HIPAA option. For a solo or small firm, the short version: if you need custom retention windows or audit logs for a regulator, you already know you are an Enterprise buyer; Anthropic lets you start Enterprise self-serve or contact its sales team for a tailored quote. The Costs That Are Not on the Pricing Page

A fair accounting of "Claude for Legal cost" includes three line items the plan price does not show.

• Research connectors. The plugins reason about law; they do not carry a case-law database. The repository's own guidance is to connect a research source (CourtListener is the free one; CoCounsel Legal from Thomson Reuters requires a customer subscription with the MCP connector enabled) and to treat citations as unverified until you do. If your firm already pays for Westlaw or Lexis, that spend continues. If you were hoping Claude for Legal replaces it, it does not, and no honest vendor says otherwise. • Verification time. Every plugin output is a draft for attorney review; Anthropic says so in the repository and the ABA Model Rules point the same way through Rules 1.1 and 5.3, as applied to AI tools in ABA Formal Opinion 512 (July 2024). Verification is billable judgment, not overhead, but it is time, and a lawyer pricing AI at zero because "the plugins are free" is pricing it wrong.
• Usage overages. Team admins (and admins on seat-based Enterprise plans) can enable usage credits so members keep working after hitting their included limit; those credits are billed on top of the seat. Current usage-based Enterprise plans have no included allowance to exceed, because all usage is billed at API rates. Pro and Max subscribers can also enable usage credits, a prepaid balance billed at standard API rates once the plan limit is reached, with an optional monthly spend limit; otherwise you wait for the window to reset or upgrade.

How This Compares to Legal-Specific Platforms

Harvey, Lexis+ AI, CoCounsel, and similar platforms bundle the model, the workflow layer, the research database, and enterprise support into one contract, and most of them do not publish list pricing. Reported figures for Harvey, which we track in our Harvey pricing post, are reported at roughly $1,200 or more per seat per month on annual contracts with minimums of around 20 seats (Harvey does not publish pricing, so these are unofficial figures), and that price buys things Claude for Legal does not include: integrated research with verified citations, vendor-managed onboarding, and a support contract. For a 200-lawyer firm that is often the right trade. A Worked Budget for a Three-Lawyer Firm

Suppose two partners and one associate, one of whom (the associate) will run the litigation plugin daily. On Team, annual billing: one premium seat at $100 and two standard seats at $20 each, so $140 per month, $1,680 per year. Add nothing for the plugins. Add nothing for CourtListener. Keep whatever research subscription you already carry. That is the entire Claude line, and it is the same arithmetic whether you use one plugin or all twelve. If the two partners turn out to be heavy users too, converting them to premium takes the bill to $300 per month, still below a single seat of most enterprise legal platforms as they are publicly reported.
