The Search Landscape Shifted Under Law Firms

For twenty years, law firm marketing had one center of gravity: rank on page one of Google for "[practice area] lawyer [city]" and the phone rings. That playbook still matters, but it is no longer the whole game.

A growing share of potential clients now also ask an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Claude. "Do I have a case if my landlord kept my deposit?" "What does a DUI lawyer cost in Ohio?" "Recommend an estate planning attorney near Columbus." The numbers are no longer fringe: iLawyerMarketing's July 2026 consumer survey of 1,110 US participants found 41.9% of people would use ChatGPT to research attorneys, up from 28.1% a year earlier, while Google dropped from 86.7% to 71.9%. The answer they get can shape which firm they contact, so it is worth checking whether your firm shows up in those answers at all. Full breakdown of the new data here.

The Three Layers of Visibility in 2026

Modern law firm visibility has three layers. In our view, they work best treated as one system:

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization): ranking in Google for short-tail searches ("divorce lawyer Miami"), long-tail searches ("how much does an uncontested divorce cost in Florida"), and high-intent searches ("divorce attorney free consultation near me"). Still the most-used source for researching attorneys: the same iLawyerMarketing survey found 71.9% of respondents would use Google, well ahead of ChatGPT at 41.9%.
  • AEO (Answer Engine Optimization): structuring content so AI assistants and Google's AI Overviews can quote it. When someone asks a legal question in your practice area, the goal is for your firm's explanation to be the one that gets cited. Full explainer on AEO here.
  • GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): making your firm the one AI recommends when someone asks it to find them a lawyer. How GEO works for law firms.

What Actually Moves the Needle

Across all three layers, the same fundamentals compound:

  • Coverage: a page for every practice area, every location you serve, and every question clients actually ask. Many small-firm sites have only a handful of pages, while the distinct searches clients run in a single practice area and market are far more numerous.
  • Structure: schema markup, clean headings, question-and-answer formatting. Humans skim it; machines parse it. Structure alone doesn't guarantee rankings or rich results, but it makes a page easier for both to use.
  • Authority signals: consistent name-address-phone data, reviews, legal directories, and content that demonstrates real expertise rather than filler.
  • Honest answers: A page can only be cited for an answer it actually gives. Content that answers the question directly, including uncomfortable answers like fee ranges, gives AI engines something to quote; a page that dodges the question does not.

The Trap: Thin AI Content at Scale

AI makes it cheap to generate hundreds of pages. Google's spam policies on scaled content abuse and doorway abuse target exactly that when it's done lazily: near-duplicate location pages, generic filler, doorway spam. Volume only works when every page targets a distinct real search with genuinely useful content. AI-built, human-reviewed: that's the standard.

Where to Start

Audit where you stand: search your own practice areas in Google, then ask ChatGPT and Perplexity the questions your clients ask. If your firm isn't in either answer, that gap is fixable, and the sooner the groundwork is in place, the sooner it can start paying off.

We do this for solo, small, and mid-sized firms: fixed scope, transparent pricing.
