What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization for Law Firms, Explained

AEO in One Sentence

Answer Engine Optimization is structuring your website's content so AI systems — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews — can find, understand, and quote it when someone asks a question your firm can answer.

Why It Matters for Law Firms Specifically

Legal questions are among the most-asked questions on AI assistants, because they're exactly the questions people are embarrassed or afraid to ask a person: "Can I be fired for this?" "Do I need a lawyer for a first DUI?" "What happens if I die without a will?" Half of consumers (50.1%) now say they would use at least one AI answer engine to research attorneys, per iLawyerMarketing's July 2026 survey, and adoption is strongest among ages 45 to 60, the demographic most likely to need estate, injury, and business counsel.

Every one of those questions is answered by somebody's content. When an AI cites a source for a legal answer, the cited firm gets the visit, the credibility, and often the client. AEO is the discipline of being that source.

What AI Engines Actually Look For

  • Direct answers: a clear, complete answer to the question in the first paragraph — not buried under 800 words of throat-clearing.
  • Question-shaped structure: headings that match how people actually ask ("How much does a DUI lawyer cost?"), with the answer immediately below.
  • Schema markup: FAQPage, LegalService, Attorney, and HowTo structured data that makes your content machine-legible.
  • Demonstrated expertise: specific jurisdictional detail, real fee ranges, actual process descriptions. Generic content doesn't get cited; specific content does.
  • Machine-readable access: fast pages, clean HTML, an llms.txt file, and no content locked behind scripts crawlers can't run.

AEO vs. SEO: Same Foundation, Different Finish Line

Good news: AEO isn't a replacement discipline with a separate budget. It's built on the same foundation as modern law firm SEO — coverage, structure, authority. The difference is the finish line. SEO wins when you're the link someone clicks. AEO wins when you're the answer the machine gives, with your firm's name attached.

The practical shift: write pages that answer one question completely, structure them so a machine can lift the answer cleanly, and mark them up so it knows what it's lifting.

How to Check Where You Stand

Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity five questions your ideal client would ask, in your practice area and state. Note which firms and sources get cited. If it's Avvo, FindLaw, and a competitor — that's your gap and your roadmap.
